How far is it...
from Birdsville to Big Red - 38km
from Birdsville to Poeppel Corner - 170KM (allow 10-12 hours return)
from Birdsville to Dalhousie Springs- 432KM

What are the roads like?
It depends on weather conditions and traffic – desert tracks are all single lane, designated tracks. Take caution on dune crests and keep left at all times.  Always assume someone may be coming from the other way.

What gear should i use climbing the sand dunes?
It’s a personal choice – suggest 2nd gear high 4wd or low 3rd.  If you deflate your tyres you should re-inflate them before entering the gibber plains.

How much fuel?
Diesel – 6km/litre.  Petrol – 5km/litre

Is the inside Birdsville Track open?
Yes, but subject to change at short notice.  Check prior to departure.

Should i contact anyone before departure?
YES, family or friends should know about your ETA and travel route

Do i need a camping permit?
You are required to have a Desert Parks Pass to continue beyond Poeppel Corner.  You may camp not more than 500m. either side of designated tracks.

How much water?
Minimum of 7 litres per person per day, includes washing up and personal hygiene.  Carry extra in case of breakdown.
